The Adirondack Experience (ADKX) in Blue Mountain Lake reopens for the 2026 season, welcoming visitors back to one of the Adirondacks’ most immersive cultural destinations.

This seasonal opening marks the return of a living museum experience—part history campus, part outdoor exploration—set across 121 acres in the heart of the Adirondacks.

For travelers planning a deeper, more meaningful Adirondack itinerary, ADKX is less a stop and more a full-day experience. And beautifully timed for Memorial Day Weekend, the museum opens on Friday, May 22, 2026.

After all, this is where the Adirondacks tell their own story.

A living museum rooted in Adirondack history.

ADKX (formerly the Adirondack Museum) has been preserving and interpreting Adirondack life since 1957. But the story of the site itself stretches much further back—beginning as a 19th-century lumber operation before evolving into a grand lakeside hotel, and eventually, one of the region’s most important cultural institutions.

Today, that layered history is part of the experience.

Visitors can wander through more than 20 historic and modern buildings, each one offering a different lens on Adirondack life—from logging and transportation to art, recreation, and environmental stewardship. The museum’s mission remains clear: to spark thoughtful dialogue about the region’s past while helping shape its future.

What to expect at ADKX in the Adirondacks.

This is not a traditional museum visit.

It’s a choose-your-own-adventure across a sprawling campus overlooking Blue Mountain Lake. Inside, curated exhibitions bring together more than 30,000 artifacts, 70,000 photographs, and thousands of archival materials that tell the story of how people have lived, worked, and played in the Adirondacks.

Outside, the experience opens up even further.

Expect scenic walking paths, lakeside views, and immersive outdoor exhibits that make the most of the museum’s setting. Families will find interactive spaces for hands-on exploration, while history enthusiasts can spend hours exploring detailed exhibits and historic structures.

It’s equally appealing to first-time visitors and longtime Adirondack regulars.

This video highlights what makes the Adirondack Experience in Blue Mountain Lake one of the most distinctive cultural destinations in the Adirondacks.

ADK Taste insight.

The ADKX campus reflects the broader evolution of the Adirondacks itself—from wilderness to resource economy to recreation destination.

The original site, once home to the Blue Mountain House hotel, hosted travelers seeking fresh air and escape from city life in the late 1800s. That same instinct still draws visitors today—only now, the experience is layered with context, storytelling, and preservation.

Few places in the Adirondacks capture that full arc so clearly.

A highlight of the Adirondack cultural season.

Opening day at ADKX signals more than just the start of a museum season—it’s a marker of spring turning toward summer in the Central Adirondacks.

As nearby destinations like Long Lake and Raquette Lake come alive, ADKX offers a grounding experience—one that connects visitors to the region's deeper rhythms and stories.

It’s especially well-suited for:

  • Curious travelers looking beyond the typical Adirondack itinerary

  • Families seeking an educational but engaging day outdoors

  • History lovers and culture-focused visitors

  • Anyone interested in how the Adirondacks became what they are today

ADK Taste recommendation.

Arrive early and plan for at least 3–4 hours on-site—this is not a quick visit.

Start with the indoor exhibits to build context, then head outside to explore the historic buildings and lake views in the afternoon light. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.
At the same time, if you love the Adirondacks, it’s worth becoming a member so you can return multiple times throughout the season.

We visit at least 3-4 times a year. And have been visiting for over 30 years.

Plan your visit to ADKX.

While the Adirondack Experience typically opens for the season in late spring, hours and programming expand into summer.

Visitors are encouraged to check the official website or social channels for exact opening dates, hours, and special events tied to opening week.

Pair a visit with a scenic drive through the Central Adirondacks or a stop in nearby lakeside communities to round out the day.
