Springtime Luminaria Walk at Lonely Hill Trail
Enjoy the springtime sound of peepers on a family-friendly walk.
Luminarias light up an Adirondack trail.
Champlain Area Trails (CATS) hosts a luminaria walk at Lonely Hill Trail. At this time of year, Adirondack peepers fill the swamp with mating calls, adding a special soundtrack to this twilight walk.
Luminarias are simple paper lanterns made by placing a votive candle in some sand inside a paper bag. The CATS team will place the glowing lanterns along the 0.5-mile out-and-back trail through a primarily coniferous forest in a low-lying area near McCrea Swamp.
Trails will be illuminated from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Come anytime during these hours to walk and enjoy the luminaria experience.
If you plan to attend, CATS asks you to register to reserve a space at the event. Visit the CATS website for more information.
What is a peeper?
The spring peeper is a small frog widespread throughout the eastern United States and Canada. It earned its name because of the chirping call it makes that marks the beginning of spring.
The chirping calls play a significant role in mating communication, as the females of the species select their mates based on the frequency and volume of the calls. Satellite males, who do not produce any peeps, position themselves strategically near those who make louder calls in an attempt to intercept females.
